What happens when you mix a stellar line up, a start-up with a mission to uncover the mystery behind your personal footprint and a passionate group of young researchers affectionately dubbed “the algae crew”? You get a zen oxygen-rich environment where you can explore your personal hopes for a sustainable future!
The MyImpact team have collaborated with the algae crew to engage music-lovers in a game of sustainability. Inside the Deep Green Forest tent courtesy of the Deep Green Biotech Hub (DGBH) festival goers will calculate their carbon emissions, choose an algae to help offset them and contribute to the growing ‘trees’ within the tent.
Which is where the oxygen comes in – algae harvest the energy of the sun to grow, soak up carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to the atmosphere, thus sustaining life. There’ll be plenty of activity inside the oxygen enriched tent, including story time with Dr Mark Liu from UTS School of Design, a chance to absorb sustainability science and make a pledge for the planet. These small pledges will create a huge impact when reciprocated by the 50,000 strong Splendour community.
After successfully winning the UTS Startups Sustainability Startup Weekend, the MyImpact team has doubled its efforts to educate people about ways to control our impact on the environment. Guillaume Ang, Founding Member of MyImpact says “with MyImpact want to create a community for everyone to share the ways we can move with our feet to globally lower our carbon emissions”.
The team of change makers has no plans to slow down after Splendour, they are just a few short months away from launching an app that uses your bank transactions to automatically measure your carbon footprint. Guillaume is excited to “remove the lack of transparency that surrounds the impact our everyday habits are having on the environment”. That’s MyImpact, but what’s yours? Download the app at the festival and join the #IKnowMyImpact movement to find out!
